Gurubhai (Joe Rich)
Gurubhai is a master of Kundalini Yoga and Tantric Numerology. He trained personally for several years with Yogi Bhajan, the master teacher who brought Kundalini Yoga from India to the United States over fifty years ago. In the decades since, Gurubhai has borne the wisdom of this ancient and authentic lineage, reverently called the “Golden Chain” of teachers. For him, the teachings truly begin when one steps off the mat and into the world. Gurubhai focuses on “applied consciousness” by bringing universal spiritual teachings to the realms of relationship, career, communication, health, food and world events. He derives joy by helping people move beyond their limiting subconscious response patterns of thought, feeling, and behavior, into a conscious life that serves both the individual and the world at-large. He will personally lead the Yoga of Relationship and Intuition Satsangs, and will throughout the retreat offer unique perspectives that frame discussion topics through lens of yogic philosophy.
Victor is an Ayurvedic Doctor, Kundalini Yoga Teacher, and the co-founder of Pacific Coast Ayurveda. Victor is a gifted Ayurvedic pulse reader, clinician, and educator. He presented at the 2019 National Ayurvedic Medical Association Conference, and regularly consults with clients from all around the globe. His dedication to his yogic practice make him a rare gem in the health community, bringing both a highly sophisticated intellect and a deeply
intuitive sensing to his counselling and teaching. He has developed expertise on the vagus nerve and its relationship to trauma, addiction and healing. Victor will be co-facilitating our Ayurvedic health workshops and will be available for questions and personalized consultations throughout the retreat.
Jennifer is our lead retreat director and co-founder of Rootdown Retreats. In addition to being a certified Kundalini Yoga Teacher, she is Rootdown’s grand conductor, establishing the organizational framework and fine tuning all the details. She is our powerhouse for all things practical and is your go-to for guest relations. Jen will be leading the meditative nature hike, offering her guidance, wisdom, and consistent presence throughout the retreat.
Patrick is a climate action activist and educator with an impassioned edge. He has a unique ability to confront the truth and inspire people to take a more holistic look at how issues of climate and environment relate to their personal lives. He is the host of “Running on Empty,” a radio show that centers around the global climate crisis, and serves on Mendocino County’s Climate Action Advisory Council. He has facilitated discussion panels at multiple colleges around California, welcoming the voices of youth activists, environmental leaders, and politicians. He is an active participant in the grassroots protests and movements inspired by climate activists around the world. He intends to help lead a transformation in consciousness that leverages both our personal and collective potential for the creation of sustainable and joyful lives.
Maryam is a writer, facilitator, and community builder. She is passionate about healthy life practices to balance the body and mind, and believes that the skill of listening is a key to to this. Though a beginner in the realm of Ayurveda, she does bring over 20 years of experience in facilitating and organizing retreats. A substantial part of what she teaches a writing practice which combines contemplative writing and active listening. You may hear her express her passion for storytelling, as a route of telling our own stories to help us find our intrinsic power.

Introduction to Vedic Astrology
Led by Victor Briere
9:00 - 11:00am
This personalized workshop will introduce Vedic Astrology and its use for your health and
wellbeing. Astrology is a highly complex science that studies the relationship between a
person’s life and the planetary dynamics at play both at the time of their birth and throughout their lives. In this interactive workshop, you will learn the basics of your personal natal chart.
Keys to Healing: Ayurveda & The Vagus Nerve
Led by Dr. Victor Briere & Gurubhai
3:00 - 5:00pm
Ayurveda offers an integrative lifestyle-based approach that sees optimal health as the synergy of well-harmonized relationship between body, mind, spirit and environment. In recent years, modern science has developed an understanding of the Vagus Nerve, a physical system that underlies trauma, stress, and chronic disease. We will explore and experience how this body of knowledge beautifully reinforces the effectiveness and relevance of Ayurvedic healing practices.
Fundamentals of a Healthy Body
Led by Dr. Victor Briere
9:00 - 11:00am
Applied understanding of these four Sanskrit words: agni, ama, dosha, dhatu, can radically change your personal health. Agni is the power of your digestion; Ama describes toxicity buildup and its resulting inflammatory response; Dosha is your innate constitution and the bio-energetic forces at play in all of nature; and Dhatu refers to the various types of tissue that compose your physical body.
The Yoga of Relationship
Led by Gurubhai
3:00 - 5:00pm
Challenge your mainstream notions of relationship by applying a yogic lens. What is the point of relationship? What role does the masculine play? The feminine? How can the experience of frustrating personality friction be transmuted into polarity that drives personal growth and expansion? In the West, Yoga as a practice has been largely reduced to strength and stretching exercises that at best aim to help one “de-stress”. In its origin, however, the word Yoga means “union with the divine.” True yoga, practiced in relationship to others, provides a pathway to authentic communication, purpose, and connection, which in turn leads to mutual upliftment and fulfillment.
Led by Gurubhai
9:00 - 11:00am
While everyone has access to their own "higher intelligence," very few know how to truly listen to it and take action based upon it. Satsang refers to a gathering of people interested in gaining wisdom in an area of life from a spiritual teacher. In this satsang, will will explore what intuition is, and what it is not. We will learn the impact that fear has on intuition, and how your intuitive capacity relates to your creativity, career, relationship, health, and general sense of Self.
Ayurvedic Self-Care Workshop
Led by Dr. Victor Briere & Oceanne Hentschel
3:00 - 5:00pm
Meet your “inner healer!” Get practical by working with the doctors to craft a self-care regimen personalized to your constitution, phase of life, health condition, lifestyle and resources. Learn the fundamental daily and seasonal practices recommended by Ayurveda to keep your channels free from toxins, nourish all five-sense organs, maintain a vital physical body, and sustain a sharp but relaxed mind.
Climate & Ecology - From Crisis to Consciousness
Led by Patrick Hentschel
3:00 - 5:00pm
We will discuss the harsh reality of our planet’s climate and ecology crises, the system of causes, and their connections to our personal health and wellbeing. As above so below – we will explore how climate change as a macrocosmic crisis reflects the microcosmic dynamics of personal health and empowerment. As the ancient wisdom has always held, what is ‘good’ for ecological vitality is also what supports the sustainability of our physical and mental health.
I loved how this day touched and integrated physical, mental and emotional balance starting with introductions and intention and moving into asana, meditation, digestion, Kirtan and deeper meditation.
I would say the most impactful was the knowledge of the cooking class. Food is medicine. The hike was a great reminder to take the time to breath and be present, connecting with nature. Helped me reset and focus again.
Thank you for introducing new techniques of Ayurvedic practices that we could actually feel, enjoy and use as habitual disciplines in our lives. So much in so little time!
